MR J.R.R TOLKIEN
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien born on 3rd of January 1892, was an author and poet. His books including The Hobbit are widely famous. Tolkien was born in Orange Free State in South Africa.
Tolkien’s father, Arthur Reuel Tolkien was a bank manager in England and his mum Mabel was just an ordinary house wife. The couple moved from England to South Africa before Tolkien was born. Tolkien also had one sibling. When Tolkien was three, he went to England with his family which was supposed to be a long family visit. Unfortunately his father died before he could join them because of rheumatic fever. Soon after, the family was left without income. So his mother took him to live her parents in King Heath, Birmingham. In 1912 Tolkien’s mother died from acute diabetes (type 1) and he was then looked after by his guardian, Father Francis Morgan.
Tolkien and his brother were home schooled by their mother. Tolkien was keen to learn new things and his mum taught him a great deal about botany which made him love the look and feel of plants. Tolkien loved drawing and learning new languages. His mother had also taught him basic Latin. After his mother died, Tolkien became a student at King Edward School. In 1911 Tolkien began studying at Exeter College in Oxford. He initially studied classics but changed his course in 1913 to English language and literature graduating in 1915.
In 1914, England entered World War 1. Tolkien served in World War 1 as a second lieutenant. After Tolkien left the army, he worked at the Oxford English Dictionary compiling words and working on the history of words. In 1920, Tolkien became the youngest professor at the University of Leeds in English language. In 1925 he returned to Oxford with a fellowship at Pembroke College. During his time at Pembroke College, Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and two volumes for The Lord of the Rings.
In 1909, Tolkien fell in love with a girl called Edith but was not allowed to marry her till he was 21. On the 22nd March 1916, they were married. In the next 8 years, they had 4 children. He loved his children a lot. In 1959, Tolkien retired from his work. He died in 1973 from ammonia.
In 1972, Tolkien was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as the commander of the Order of the British Empire and received an insignia. His book The Hobbit has been very popular and so has The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien had published more than 29 books. The Lord of the Rings was one of the most popular books of the 20th century.
